High ConceptThis game was created for my Mobile App Development class at Abilene Christian University (ACU) using the Corona SDK. I worked on this project with my sister, Laura Brothers.
In Rocketeer, players will cross our solar system one planet at a time, learning fun-facts about each planet as they get to them. The player mans a spaceship and must rapidly tap the screen to destroy asteroids in their path. The more asteroids they take out, the higher their score at the end of the level. |
Design GoalsCreate a fun game that can also teach fun facts about our Solar System.
Make a fun, mobile game within the time given.

Level Walkthrough
- Upon opening the app, the player sees the Main Menu screen. They can tap anywhere on the screen to start playing the game.
- The second screen introduces the player to what their objective is, which is to visit each planet and learn about them. It also informs them that their ship is equipped with a blaster to destroy asteroids.
- Each level in Rocketeer focuses on traveling to a specific planet. Some planets take longer to reach but have fewer asteroids, while others may be reached in a shorter amount of time and have many asteroids. We focused on keeping things as close to reality as possible, making the time to reach a planet longer if the distance between the starting and ending planet was further. The player travels through 9 levels that go to the 8 planets in our Solar System, as well as a level for Pluto at the end as a bit of a sentimental throwback to when we were kids and it was still considered a planet.
- After the player reaches a planet, a menu screen appears where they can read an interesting fact about the planet they have arrived at. This screen also displays their score, which is obtained by destroying asteroids. The amount of lives they have left is also displayed. The player gains lives by destroying a certain number of asteroids, as they destroy more asteroids they gain more lives. The player can have a maximum of 5 lives.
ArtFor this project I created the asteroids that the player encounters throughout each level. We didn't want all of them to look exactly the same, so I made three different sizes of asteroid (small, medium, and large). To get the effect I wanted, I used the brush tool to make the initial shape and color, and then added noise, blurred, and burned it to give it definition and add depth.
